DIY WAVe Valentine + 4 Acts of Kindness Ideas

In need of a card for your valentine? We have the perfect one for you! Follow these steps to make a WAV-themed card for your loved one this holiday. Or if you already have your valentine prepared, we've gathered four random acts of kindness to brighten the days of others this holiday!

Put on the WAV Heartbeats playlist while you create to support students and community voices!

Supplies:

  • Watercolor Paper or Cardstock

  • Watercolor paints, markers or anything you want to color with

  • Scissors

  • Tape or glue

Part 1: Create your heart wave

Steps:

1: Grab your watercolor paper

2: Draw a heart in the center of the page

3: From the center of the heart, draw a hill with a flat bottom on both sides

4: With a pencil, draw 3-4 lines inside of the shapes that mimic the edges of the hill

5: With blue watercolor, paint the shapes but leave the inner pencil lines as white

6: Cut out the design

Once you are done, set these waves aside. We will come back to them in part six!

Part 2: Create your pop up waves

These will go inside the card!

Steps:

  1. Cut out three watercolor papers that are different heights (one tall, one medium, and one short) but are same lengths

  2. Outline and cut out curves at the top of each of the papers — there can be as many curves as you want.

  3. Paint each paper with blue watercolor adding different lightness of shades

  4. With blue and black pens or dark blue watercolor, draw several segmented and wavy lines

  5. 6: Cut out the design

Once you are done, set these waves aside. We will come back to them in part four!

Part 3: Design your background

This will be the inside of your card!

  1. Fold a water color sheet in half ensuring that it's the size you want for your card, but that it's the same length as the wave pieces from part two

  2. On the top half of the card, paint a sky with clouds and a sun

  3. On the bottom half, paint a blue ocean and with blue and black pens, draw several segmented and wavy lines

Part 4: Add your Wave inserts

These will pop up when you open the card!

Steps:

  1. Fold the bottom of the waves from part two and use tape or glue to attach them to the bottom half of your card

  2. Cut out small strips of paper

  3. Tape or glue the strips of paper in between each wave so that they open together

Part 5: Add a fun creature

Steps:

  1. With another piece of watercolor paper, draw, paint, and cut out a fun creature

Part 6: Assemble

  1. With tape or glue, attach the wave cut-outs from part one to the front of the card

  2. Attach the creature from step five to the tallest wave cutout

  3. Add your note!

4 Ways to Spread Kindness this Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to spread love and kindness, so we encourage you to try one of the 4 options below:

  1. Use a valentine to introduce yourself to your neighbors

Do you have neighbors you've never met or ones you wish you knew more? Introduce yourself with a valentine! You can make a card like the one above, design one of your own, grab one from the store, or even get creative with a baked good. Valentines can take many different forms, and it's the thought that counts!

  1. Tell your friends why you’re grateful for them or hold a valentine-making party Valentines day is a time for love — both romantic and platonic! You can spread kindness this valentines day by telling your friends why you're thankful for them. It can be as simple as a meme, a text, or a call, as long as you make sure to let your friends know they're loved. Or if your friends are around this holiday, get together and connect with a valentines crafting party! All you will need is paper and pens (and maybe some snacks).

  2. Make yourself a valentine and write things you love about yourself

Show yourself an act of kindness by making a valentine just for you! Make a list of things you love about yourself and things that brighten your day, then brainstorm ways you can spend more time with those activities! The most important step is to have fun! Again, valentines can take many different forms, so if you don't feel like writing, choose an activity that will brighten your day the most!

  1. Volunteer for Valentine's Day

Spread kindness around the community by volunteering in February, or by making a donation to local resources! For Columbus locals, here are some opportunities to get you started from Besa, a local non-profit that connects volunteers with initiatives:

Thursday, February 12

11 AM - 1:30 PM

Come with National Church Residences as they bring Valentine's Day joy to seniors! As a volunteer, you will work along side residents at Stygler Village as they make Valentine's Day creations.

Friday, February 13th

1 PM - 8 PM (3-hour shifts)

595 Van Buren Drive • Franklinton, OH

Visit the Van Buren Shelter to provide hot meals to shelter guests by working alongside the kitchen staff to prepare and serve meals to guests of the shelter.

Support Shoppers at HEART Market

Thursday, February 26th

8 AM- 12PM

Join the Mid-Ohio Market in assisting shoppers at the HEART pantry. As a volunteer, you greet shoppers, help guide them through the market, or assist with restocking shelves as needed.
